Manage Soil Erosion More Efficiently With A Road Condition Monitoring System
The issue of soil erosion is a big one for many industries that use excavation as a tool in their work. Mining and construction companies, for example, have to deal with walls and regulations which restrict the environmental impact that the industry can have on the site, and they are often obliged to resort to a variety of different products and solutions designed to prevent the loss of soil particles and dust into the atmosphere. One particular problem involves the issue of haul roads, access sites to and from the main excavation area, which are often a prime location for soil erosion and the creation of fine dust. Using a road condition monitoring system can help businesses to get a firm hold on what their company needs to do to restrict soil erosion.
The condition of the road
A haul road is often one that is cut out of the landscape in the early stages of the excavation, and it is also one of the most vulnerable areas of the site. The road is cut into existing soil, and the top layers are removed. They may be piled up along the side of the road, forming excavation mounds, or they may be placed in mounds at the centre of the site. The loss of the topsoil means that the roads are made out of less stable soils, often loosened soil which is more likely to form small particles that can be released into the atmosphere as dust. Using aroad condition monitoring system is one way in which companies can try to prevent the condition of the road from getting out of hand.
Problems with the road surface
Monitoring systems are necessary in order to tell companies whether they are suffering a problem along a particular area of road. If they did not monitor the road, then they would be forced to use the preventative dust control solutions along the entire surface of the road, which would be expensive and is often unnecessary. Monitors can instead tell companies where there are particular areas of the road that are more likely to cause dust, for example areas of the road which are becoming excessively dry, or places where the road surface has started to disintegrate. Soil falling from the excavation mounds and side of the road may also be an issue that can contribute to dust, and that can be spotted through careful monitoring.
